Sean “Diddy” Combs is the latest person to toss his two cents into the hat of hip hop’s current status, actually blaming the DJ for the culture’s decline.
Diddy blames the DJ for Hip-Hop's shortcomings.
In an interview with MTV, Combs explains why hip hop could be better had the DJ – in his words – had not fallen off.
“People have figured out the formula when they make records for radio, and DJs ain't DJs no more," Diddy explained. "DJs don't break records no more. DJs don't play album cuts. DJs play what is going to move the crowd. DJs, they don't expose you to the newness. That was the DJs' thing. Hip Hop is in a recession also. It's not dead, it's definitely way better than where it was at, as far as with 'Ye, T.I. and with Jeezy. It's so much great stuff out there, the responsibility has to come with the DJs."
Taking offense to Combs’ remarks, veteran deejay Doo Wop has come to the defense, instead calling Diddy’s claims “hypocritical.”
Doo Wop said, “Are these deejays [you're] referring to the same and very well selected deejays that influential people such as yourself personally empower to spin your 'new single' first,” Doo Wop said, “while the so called ‘deejays with style’ gets it last and probably from a radio rip where your DJ of choice already played it?
Responding to Diddy’s claims of the deejays’ inability to expose fans to newness, Doo Wop asked, “When's the last time you used that undeniable Diddy influence to help (as you say), a ‘deejay with style’ get a radio spot since you're so disappointed at the state of the radio game?”
